da spicy bet: Andros Townsend’s to Crystal Palace was just so, so right.
da pixbet: Andros Townsend seems to just fit at that club, it really does make sense for all involved. However, it’s a bit of a nightmare for Newcastle. The England international was only signed by the Magpies in January and has already departed to return south once again.
His career has been dominated by brief ventures at clubs and Townsend’s stay at Newcastle was no different.
However, his transfer must not be an example to follow for the rest of Rafa Benitez’s squad. The Magpies have been relegated, yes, but that does not mean the club will necessarily be in any weaker position in just 12 months.
Patience needs to be the name of the game for the Newcastle squad members and, as the signings of Gayle and Ritchie have shown, this club could well be on it’s way back to a position of relative strength.
Of course, this seems an odd statement when they have just been relegated, but the prospect of a lengthy time under the management of Benitez is mouth-watering for many a Geordie. A club that has been run so poorly deserves a chance to return to some sort of it’s former glories.
Benitez has a long way to go to make Newcastle a team that can challenge for Europe, although it is not as infeasible as many would suspect. The club has a lot of promise and, actually, a squad that possesses a lot of talent and could challenge in the top flight regularly under Benitez.
It’ll take some time, but the current Newcastle players should hold firm with their manager and the club. Perhaps, even, have a sense of pride to get the club out of the mess that they played a part in creating.
Newcastle will, barring the ridiculous, waltz back up to the Premier League next season and that one campaign could be fundamental to many members of their squad. Benitez, a truly excellent coach, will help players develop and they will all be markedly better for it. Look at Matt Ritchie, for instance; he may have moved solely for money, but he has also moved for the opportunity to work with one of the most reputable coaches in European football.
It looks bleak at St James’ Park right now, it looks pretty dire if we’re honest, yet all is not lost. So much can change at the club with Benitez at the helm and, with that loyal fan base, there is no reason the club can’t grow rapidly once they gain promotion back to the top of English football.
Sometimes players need to spend a period doing something that they don’t really want to for the sake of their career. This, for Newcastle’s stars, is one of those times. Some of their bigger names may get offered big money moves to top half Premier League clubs, but will they get the chance to have such a magnificent fan base behind them like they would at Newcastle? Will they have the chance to become a hero? Could they even start regularly?
It’s unlikely. Benitez should be a big enough draw alone to keep the players interested and Magpies around the world will hope their players stay.
