da cassino: Tottenham Hotspur legend Ledley King has waxed lyrical about Eric Dier’s versatility on the pitch.
da pinup bet: The England international faced criticism from some fans last season, and doubts were raised over his future.
According to The Guardian, Manchester United were keen to sign Dier this summer, with reports claiming that a £50m bid was being considered.
However, the 23-year-old’s likelihood of moving to Old Trafford has diminished after the Red Devils snapped up Nemanja Matic from Chelsea.
Dier joined Spurs in 2014 from Sporting Libson, and began his career at the North London club as a defender.
He then moved into a midfield role and thrived, but competition from Victor Wanyama forced Dier to return to the back line.
Last season, manager Mauricio Pochettino tinkered with the Englishman’s role, but at times he struggled for consistency.
King has been a fan of Dier’s ever since he first caught a glimpse of the player’s talent two years ago.
The retired defender told the London Evening Standard:
“I remember watching him in pre-season in Denver [in 2015], and he impressed me straight away. At the time, I didn’t know he could step into midfield and perform that well.
“I quickly saw he was capable of that and he went on to have a great season in midfield. I’m not sure what position he would say he wants to play, but he does both equally well.
“It can be difficult but playing multiple positions is the sign of a good player. When you’re competing in a tough team that’s full of top players, you’re usually happy to be on the pitch and to have a starting position. He can start and if he feels as comfortable at the back as he does in midfield, it may be no problem to him.”
