Portsmouth's appeal to the Football Association with a late bid to play in next season's Europa League has failed.
The Football Association and Premier League have told the south coast club that their appeal, after failing to apply for a UEFA licence before the March deadline, will not be heard.
Pompey's surprise place in this season's FA Cup Final had meant that a potential spot in the Europa League was available to them.
Pompey missed the original deadline after administrator Andrew Andronikou admitted the financial uncertainty at Fratton Park had taken precedence over lodging the required paperwork with the relevant authorities.
However, Pompey have now been told that a late application for a licence will not be accepted.
A joint statement from the FA and Premier League read: "The FA and Premier League have confirmed to the administrators of Portsmouth Football Club that they shall not consider any late application for granting of a UEFA Club Licence for the 2010-11 season."
The Europa League place now looks set to be awarded to the club which finishes seventh in the final Premier League standings.
Liverpool are currently seventh but Everton, who are five points adrift, still harbour hopes of catching their Merseyside rivals.Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email
