da apostebet: Despite being one of the biggest clubs in the Championship with a vast pool of resources, Leeds United were left with just one senior goalkeeper in 22-year-old Bailey Peacock-Farrell after the recent injury suffered by loanee Jamal Blackman, and this has highlighted a bigger problem facing England’s second tier.
Leeds Live confirmed last Friday that Blackman had returned to his parent club Chelsea having broken his leg in the U23s 3-0 loss to Birmingham. The 25-year-old collided with Blues forward Beryly Lubala in the box, as both players went for a loose ball at Thorp Arch, and it was Blackman who came off worse.
This means that the Whites will almost certainly have to delve into the winter transfer window in order to secure a keeper, but their options seem to be limited thanks to Premier League clubs’ new-found penchant for signing talented and experienced goalkeepers as their third choice options when these players should really be turning out every week in the Championship.
For example, just this summer Chelsea signed former Leeds stopper and now 38-year-old Robert Green, who just two seasons ago played every minute of the Whites’ Championship campaign and could definitely still do a job for a second tier side.
This wasn’t the first strange signing of the summer from a top six club though, as Manchester United had previously announced the capture of 35-year-old Lee Grant who left Stoke to become the Red Devils’ third choice behind David de Gea and Sergio Romero, despite Jose Mourinho already having highly-rated youngster Joel Pereira on the books.
The promoted teams have also been guilty of hoarding their impressive Championship goalkeepers and denying them game time. John Ruddy was Wolves’ number one during their title winning season last year and Marcus Bettinelli helped Fulham through via the playoffs, but both have been dropped in favour of new signings in the Premier League.
This trend, linked to the huge amounts of money Premier League clubs have to build their squads, is directly impacting the level of goalkeeping in the Championship and could mean Leeds struggle to find a quality replacement for Blackman.
Most clubs in the second tier would jump at the chance to sign an experienced goalkeeper with knowledge of the league and previous promotions under their belt, but if Premier League clubs continue to keep these kinds of keepers on their benches then the Championship will suffer.
